17-18.5. FHRA Spring Nat´s (SM & CUP Drag Race), Motopark,Virtasalmi 

 

New Drag Racing season 2014 started with building a new engine for altered. We opted to run with C0AE heads again but this time with ex-NASCAR titanium valves with a lot stronger valve springs. Also new block was done by our sponsor PP-Autokoneistus. Petri Pukki also machined our forged crankshaft to be used again with couple of new Callies Compstar connecting rods and one new SRP piston. Deck surfaces were ground to zero to get some more compression pressure from the engine.

Håkan from Sweden manufactured two new timing covers for us to be used in our engines. Those have no provision for water pump and they are for race purposes only. Water comes from electrical pump anyway... No other significant modifications were made to dragster, except new safety harnesses and switching to Megasquirt 3 engine management system and bigger fuel injectors. We were really hoping to go faster this time...

But, season started badly, as in the first qualification run, one exhaust valve stuck to guide on right cylinder head and we had to take the head off and do some work with it. Also, in the run we had too much pressures in rear tyres and front end started to hop again after launch. 60 ft was good 1.27 seconds but Jyrki lifted the pedal after 6.8 seconds... Still, 9.1 with only 211 km/h! We have the power! Just need to make it work for us...

After we got engine back together again, we went to next round of qualifications and another disaster hit us! At the burn out, water flew from under the left side head gasket! Marchalls pointed us back to pit area and more work was ahead of us... Both heads off and copper gaskets off and Fel Pro blues on... And time run out and we couldn't make another pass on saturday. So, we had to start eliminations from last position qualifiers as Jyrki took a red light on the first run in the morning. But, anything can happen. Right? Like last year, when we were in the finals and lost there... But not this time!

 

Made in Sweden by Håkan K. timing covers arrived and those are state of the art and two of a kind items. Only for racing...

And a lot lighter and stronger than originals.

Trial fit to new block.

New race engine without heads and some more.

After upgrade to MS3, we don't need to carry on a laptop anymore...

RPM sensor on driveshaft loop. More data to follow... Wheel spin etc....

New Megasquirt 3 with data logging directly to memory card.

We also got our names to Y-block book by Charlie Morris. A long waited book about how to rebuild and modify Y-blocks.

One new feature for 2014 is twisted turbos. Now they are heading towards the finish line and we hope they get more air now to make more power...

Also new for season 2014 is titanium valves with lash caps in C0AE heads.

With Megasquirt 3 we get more data and a lot faster logging.

And Simo has more to learn and think...

Oh, and as Jyrki broke his middle finger during a volley ball play, he has to drive with that support on his finger!

One of our local fans was watching us when we were starting our new engine for first times.

On our way to Motopark track, we made our usual stop at Mikkeli to get some food and beverages...

At the track we got our sticker signing that we have supported finnish drag racing!

Sun is coming down and we were running short on time to make it run before Sunday. And we didn't...

So, it was time to have some whiskey and sauna again...

Sunday morning and we got another sticker from fellow Y-blocker. This vehicle is definetely Y-block powered!

Same situation as last year in opening round of Finnish Drag Race Championships. Jyrki against Anna-Kaisa Manninen in her Camaro. Except this time we lost. Our dial in was too tight, Jyrki took poor reaction time and thus one boost pressure hose was loose, car didn't jump from the line and time was only 9.4 sec with 227 kilometers per hour. Congrats to Anna-Kaisa! We were ready for trip back home...

Tuning and run in session May 4th before first race at Motopark track in May 17th. Just before it started snowing again...
